03Applications

Where polyaspartic coatings work

  • Blue flake epoxy garage floor in an empty two-car garage

    Garages

A common application, and where hot tire resistance earns what the system costs.

  • Covered lanai with a gray flake epoxy floor beside a screened pool

    Patios and Lanais

Sun-exposed exterior concrete, where UV stability is a major specification factor.

  • Light gray speckled epoxy flake floor in an open commercial taproom and service area

    Commercial Floors

Retail, shops and back-of-house areas, scheduled around the hours your business is actually open.

  • Motorcycle displayed on a black and white flake epoxy floor against a checkered wall

    Showrooms

Appearance under display lighting; many qualifying installations are completed in a single visit to the space.

  • Gray epoxy floor with a drain channel between stainless steel commercial tanks

    Shops and Service Bays

Chemical and hot tire exposure, phased bay by bay so the shop keeps working.

  • Two crew members rolling coating across a workshop floor

    As a Topcoat Over Epoxy

The hybrid build: epoxy for the body, polyaspartic on top for UV stability.

Sun-exposed patios and lanais are where the UV argument stops being theoretical and starts being the reason to choose it.

Garages are a common setting for this work. If a straight epoxy build fits your garage better, see our dedicated garage floor coatings page for the full flake, solid and metallic finish lineup.

Larger jobs get the same treatment as our broader commercial concrete coatings work — scheduled around your hours, not ours.

04Why polyaspartic

Why people choose polyaspartic flooring

  • UV Stable

Aliphatic polyaspartics hold their color in direct sunlight where conventional epoxy can amber.

  • Hot Tire Resistant

Resists the hot tire pickup that lifts poorly specified coatings off a garage slab.

  • Chemical and Stain Resistant

A properly cured system resists many common automotive and household spills when they're cleaned up promptly. Resistance varies by chemical and exposure time.

  • Installed in a Single Visit

Many installations are completed in one visit, though the floor is not back in service that day.

  • Wider Install Window

Selected polyaspartic systems can cure across a broader temperature range, which can matter in August.

  • Flake or Solid Color

Available in flake and solid-color finishes, including all of SCDS's stocked flake blends.

UV stability matters most in Florida: sun-exposed aprons, patios and door thresholds are where conventional epoxy shows its limits first.

05Which system

Polyaspartic or epoxy

Both are resin coatings over a prepared slab. Three things actually differ.

Installation and recoat timeIn Florida sunBest when
PolyasparticWorking time measured in minutes; many single-day installsBetter UV and color stability than conventional epoxyThe floor sees sun, or hot tire pickup is a concern
EpoxyLonger working time; larger builds can run more than a dayCan amber without a UV-stable topcoatYou want build, value and the widest color options

Customer access times are the same either way. SCDS specifies at least 24 hours before foot traffic and 48 hours before vehicles on every coatings job, epoxy or polyaspartic. What polyaspartic actually shortens is installation and recoat time — not how soon you can use the finished floor.

  • Same preparation either way
  • Same flake and color options
  • Hybrid systems available
  • Recommended per slab

See every stocked blend on our color options page, and our full epoxy floor installation options are there if a straight epoxy build fits your slab better.

06Access times

When You Can Walk on It and Park on It

Our Standard: 24 Hours to Walk, 48 Hours to Drive

SCDS recommends waiting at least 24 hours before foot traffic and 48 hours before parking a vehicle. We confirm your access times in writing before the crew leaves. If job-site conditions require additional time, we will tell you.

A polyaspartic coating can feel dry before it is ready for normal use. Our return-to-service times give the installed system time to cure before it takes vehicle weight, hot tires and turning forces.

Why We Use Conservative Access Times

Some polyaspartic systems advertise extremely fast return to service. Actual timing depends on the products installed, slab temperature, moisture and conditions during application.

We follow the requirements for the SCDS coating system and warranty rather than using the earliest possible touch-dry time. Our goal is simple: return your floor to service quickly, without rushing the preparation that protects it long-term.

  • Most installations completed in one day
  • Walk after 24 hours
  • Drive after 48 hours
  • Access times confirmed in writing
  • Job-site conditions accounted for

We would rather give your floor the time it needs than rush the return to service.

07Preparation

Fast Cure Does Not Mean Less Preparation

What a Typical One-Day Installation Still Requires

Many polyaspartic floors can be installed in a single day. The slab condition, project size, selected system and conditions during installation all affect that timeline. Fast-cure chemistry shortens coating and recoat times — it does not eliminate surface preparation.

The slab still has to be ground, evaluated for moisture, and repaired at cracks and joints before the coating goes down. That preparation is invisible once the floor is finished, but it's one of the biggest factors in how well the coating bonds.

Cleaning concrete is not the same as grinding it. Likewise, an undiscovered moisture condition can put adhesion at risk even when the coating itself cures quickly.

The same principle applies to access times. How soon you can walk or drive on the floor depends on the system, the manufacturer's guidance, and jobsite conditions like slab temperature and humidity. SCDS's standard is 24 hours before walking and 48 hours before driving, confirmed in writing for every project.

Fast cure does not correct elevated moisture vapor in a concrete slab. We evaluate that risk before recommending the system, because a one-day installation only matters if the finished coating remains bonded.

08Process

How we install a polyaspartic floor

  1. 01

    Estimate and Evaluate

A free on-site visit and slab and moisture evaluation, followed by a written scope. That scope states whether your floor needs a complete polyaspartic system or a polyaspartic topcoat over an epoxy base.

  2. 02

    Grind and Stage

The slab is ground and repaired, and every material is measured and staged before each batch is mixed. Once the material is mixed, the working window is short.

  3. 03

    Install Inside the Working Window

For a full flake system, the base coat and flake broadcast go down in sequence. Each batch is mixed and applied inside a short working window — typically minutes, not hours.

  4. 04

    Topcoat, Cure and Release

The polyaspartic topcoat is applied and the floor is left to cure. Before we leave, we confirm the written access times: 24 hours for foot traffic and 48 hours for vehicles.

Polyaspartic's working time is measured in minutes, not hours. That is why sequencing, crew coordination and installer experience matter.

09Care

Durability, cure and care

The warranty is stated in full above; this section covers what to expect from the coating over time and how to care for it.

Florida sun and color stability

Aliphatic polyaspartic coatings provide substantially better UV and color stability than many conventional epoxy coatings. That makes them especially valuable on patios, lanais and other sun-exposed concrete.

Better UV stability does not make the floor immune to long-term weathering, wear, heat or movement in the underlying slab.

Installing in Florida heat

High slab temperature shortens an already short working time. We staff and schedule around it.

Day-to-day care

  • Sweep or dust mop regularly so grit does not act as an abrasive.
  • Use a neutral cleaner or a manufacturer-approved degreaser. Avoid acidic or highly alkaline cleaners.
  • Clean oil and chemical spills promptly. Chemical resistance varies by substance and exposure time.
  • Use protective pads under jack stands and other concentrated heavy loads.

10Cost

What affects the cost of a polyaspartic floor

  1. 01

    Square Footage

Square footage establishes the baseline. Repairs, coating removal and additional slab preparation can materially affect the final price.

  2. 02

    Slab Condition

Cracks, pitting and surface flaking all add repair work before the first coat, exactly as they would under epoxy.

  3. 03

    Existing Coating

Stripping a failed floor is a different day of work from coating a bare, sound, well-prepared slab.

  4. 04

    Full System or Topcoat

A complete polyaspartic build prices differently from an epoxy base carrying a polyaspartic topcoat.

  5. 05

    Flake and Color

A stocked blend, a full-broadcast flake system, or a custom blend mixed to match your space.

  6. 06

    Access and Scheduling

Whether the space is occupied, whether we phase it bay by bay, and whether any work runs after hours.

Polyaspartic material generally costs more than epoxy. What it buys is UV stability and hot tire resistance, not a shorter wait.

14Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyaspartic Flooring

How fast can I use a polyaspartic floor?

You can walk on it after 24 hours and drive on it after 48 — SCDS's standard minimums, confirmed in writing before the crew leaves. Florida humidity and slab temperature can extend either one.

Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?

Not better, different. UV stability and hot tire resistance are what polyaspartic flooring actually buys you. Epoxy gives you longer working time, more build and wider color options for the money.

Will polyaspartic yellow in the Florida sun?

Aliphatic polyaspartic coatings offer substantially better UV and color stability than many conventional epoxy coatings, which is the practical reason to specify one for a sun-exposed floor. It isn't immune to everything the sun does over time, though — expect the same gradual weathering any exterior finish sees.

Can polyaspartic be installed in summer heat?

Yes, with planning. High slab temperature shortens an already short working window, so summer installs take more staffing and scheduling care on our end.

Does polyaspartic cost more than epoxy?

The material generally does. What the extra material buys is UV stability and hot tire resistance. The access times are the same either way.

Can polyaspartic go over an existing epoxy floor?

That's the hybrid build, and it's a common one: epoxy for the body, polyaspartic on top for UV stability. It only works over a sound, well-bonded epoxy floor, so we identify the existing coating and test its adhesion first.

Does polyaspartic still need the floor ground?

Yes, exactly as much as epoxy does. Fast cure shortens the cure time, not the preparation — the slab still gets diamond-ground and evaluated for moisture before any coating goes down.

What warranty comes with a polyaspartic floor?

The same 10-year coatings warranty that covers our epoxy work, extendable to a lifetime warranty with a maintenance plan. Fast cure does not change the coverage. Proper preparation remains central to adhesion and long-term performance.
